Welcome 2010!

We've had a great night hanging out with Cyle, Micah, and our little brother Tyrique!  Cooked hot dogs and smores on the firepit outside, lots of rough housing with Turbo (he's going to miss the boys so much!), and lots of Playstation 2.  What a way to start the new year : )

I believe those are some happy faces : )

I'm really looking forward to 2010!

Oh, to be 9 again...

My nephews, Cyle and Micah, will be staying with us in Lubbock until Saturday.  We left San Marcos yesterday with a full car...christmas presents, luggage, 2 boys, a big brown dog, and Kyle and myself.  That is a lot for our little hatchback!

Here are Turbo and the boys, ready to hit the road!  We had Turbo partitioned off in the back seat with the split seat down so he'd have more room to stretch out...but he wasn't about to curl up in the back of the car.  He wants to be where the people are!

I tried unhooking the hammock seperating him from the boys, and he ended up in Micah's lap...he likes to ride with his head on the armrest : )

After stopping for lunch, we decided to just put Turbo in the middle, and everyone was happy.

When we arrived in Lubbock last night, we were pleasantly surprised to find lots of snow still on the ground!  The boys played in the snow in the dark last night, when they got up this morning, and this evening in the dark.  There's a chance for more snow tomorrow...hope it happens!

Here are some pictures from this morning:

Yes, Micah is licking the tree...he didn't know I was taking pictures of them from inside the house.

Turbo was very unhappy that the boys were playing in the front yard without him.

Goodnight!

Thankful

One morning, Kyle's brings my cell phone to me..."you missed a call from your mom".  It's 5:45 am.  I lay in bed for a minute and as I become more awake and aware, I begin to get the feeling that something isn't right.  Why would my mom be calling this early in the morning?

When I call my mom back, the first thing I remember her saying is "your dad's had a major heart attack..."  At that moment my world stopped.  I thought he was gone.  Turns out, he was alive and in critical condition in the ICU after the insertion of two stents into two completely blocked coronary arteries.  By 10:30 that morning I had made it to Dallas and after telling my grandmother the bad news, was on my way in her car to Longview.  Thankfully, by the time I got to see dad, his breathing tube and the tube draining blood from his stomach had been removed.

Five days later, dad was sent home.  After the New Year, the plan is to place another stent into a third artery...

We are so lucky and there is so much for which to be thankful.  I am thankful for the doctors and nurses in Marshall that recognized a critical situation: within an hour of getting dad to the hospital in Marshall, he had been shipped to Longview and into surgery.  I am thankful that dad recognized he might be having a heart attack and was able to get that aspirin bottle open.  I am thankful my mom rushed him to the hospital so quickly.  I am thankful that the cardiologist was at Good Shepherd when they brought my dad in so that they could rush him into surgery.  I am thankful that I was able to be home for a week to be with my mom and dad.  I am thankful that my parents have the strength to make difficult choices during difficult times.  And I was so thankful to get to see my dad this past weekend at our extended family Christmas party in Forney.  Things could have turned out very differently!

On a lighter night, I am thankful that Kyle seems to enjoy living in Lubbock.  Because it looks like we will be here at least until 2014, when I graduate from TTUHSC School of Medicine with my M.D.!  I will be starting medical school at Tech in the fall, and I can't begin to explain how excited I am to have the opportunity to chase this dream (and to have a family and husband that support my endless career as a student...only four more years guys!).

Here are a few pictures:

This is the suit I wore for my interview at Tech.  Do I look like a future M.D.?  Turbo thinks so!  The admissions committee must have thought there was one hiding in there somewhere, b/c they let me in!

Mom, Kyle says thanks for the Lowe's gift card!  The garage looks awesome thanks to you : )

Just for grins...

Mom, love the Cinnabar Baker.  Perfect for grilled cilantro and butter trout and veggies : )

New Happenings in the LBK

Just thought I would give an update about what's been going on with us!

We had our first visitors since moving to Lubbock the weekend before last.  Chris, Sharisa, & Kent made the trip to Lubbock for a football game and spent 2 nights with us.  I really enjoyed visiting all of our old Lubbock favorites with them, and some new ones as well (specifically, the Llano Estacado Winery).  Good to know info: babies are welcome at wineries : )  Kyle and I watched Kent while Chris and Sharisa were cheering on the Red Raiders...Kyle got to change his first dirty diaper, and we successfully made Kent laugh a lot, fed & bathed him, and put the little guy to sleep.  We had a great time!

So, Kyle has been borrowing our good friend Nathan's car since we've been in Lubbock.  Unfortunately, we've had a few issues with the car.  The first week we had it, the battery died, which took a few days to take care of.  The next issue occured when the check engine light came on...over the course of a whole weekend, Kyle managed to fix whatever was broken (something with the clutch and something else...he told me, but it all goes in one ear and out the other...).  I think there was another issue with the car, but at the moment I can't remember what it was.  Anyways, the car found its final resting place yesterday....

While Kyle and a co-worker were on their way to Tahoka yesterday morning, a girl ran straight through a stop sign, apparently while texting on her cell phone.  Nathan's car faired a little better than the her truck (which looks like a pancake after rolling multiple times)...

Thankfully everyone walked away.  The girl admitted to texting, appeared to possibly be under the influence, had a revoked license, and probably no insurance.  If Nathan's insurance doesn't cover the cost of the car, then we are pretty sure that ours will.  RIP Nathan's car.

In other news, I started substitute teaching yesterday.  I got lucky and had a class with a student teacher, so I really didn't do anything (it was also a class of AP students...doubt they're all that intelligent and well-behaved).  I am back at it today, and doubt that I will be so lucky two days in a row.  Wish me luck!

Kyle and I had a meeting with Big Brother, Big Sister yesterday and will probably be getting a Little Brother soon.  We're very excited!

New Beginnings

I have had a request to update the blog.  So, this is for you, Minnette!

After spending two weeks in Austin, crashing at the houses of our friends and family, Kyle and I have finally settled into our new place in Lubbock.  Thank you Cale, Alli, Chris, and Sharisa for letting Kyle, Turbo, and I stay in your extra bedrooms : )  We enjoyed our time in Austin and especially enjoyed getting to know little Kent better.  He is such a cutie. Here are some pictures of Kent and Turbo that I stole from Sharisa's Facebook:

Moving...always so much fun to do.  Of course, it woudn't be ANY fun at all if a few things didn't go wrong.  We were supposed to move into our new house on Sept 16, but the new wood floors were not ready, so we had to postpone the move until a week later.  Thankfully, we had no problems changing the flight, hotel, and moving truck reservations we had already made.

The day before we headed to College Station to get all of our things out of storage, both me, Chris, & Sharisa (who we were staying with) came down with some kind of stomach bug.  UGHH!.  Somehow, Kyle was lucky and didn't end up getting it, but I was very nausous for several days and everything, including saltine crackers, gave me indigestion.

Getting all of our stuff out of storage went smoothly, and my dad, Kyle, and I headed out of College Station on the road to Lubbock, all in seperate vehicles...the GTI, Lightning, and rental truck.  To add to the moving excitement, I get a call when I am about 30 miles outside of College Station from Kyle saying that the Lightening has died.  Now, this truck and I don't have a very good relationship, but I told myself I would keep my mouth shut.  And I did.  The truck was towed back to College Station.  On the up side, I enjoyed only having to drive part of the way to Lubbock since I wasn't feeling so great.  And, we enjoyed a great book on cd during the drive,  The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky.  Kyle doesn't really like books on tape, but with the truck mishap I don't think he felt like he should complain.

We were very lucky to have my dad and Kyle's dad, Chuckles, help us move.  It only took a couple of hours on a nice, cool morning in Lubbock to unload the rental truck.  We still don't have everything unpacked, so pictures of the inside of the house will have to come later, but here it is from the outside.

The Friday after we moved in, Kyle ended up flying to Austin to borrow our friend Nathan's car.  In the hopes that I would quickly be able to find a job, we weren't sure if we would be able to make it with just one vehicle.  Alas, still no job...

On the other hand, Kyle seems to be having a good first week at his new job.  His title is "Rangeland Management Specialist", and I think he will be working with local farmers at developing management plans for their land.  I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that's about all I know.  He seems to really like the guys that is working with, too.  Tonight, he is going dove hunting with one of the other men.  Also, it turns out that a couple of the guys also live in Lubbock, so Kyle will be carpooling with them to Tahoka (~ 30 mile drive) every day.  This is really great in that it will save us some gas money, especially when Kyle gets the gaz-guzzling Lightening back up and running.

One great thing about the new house is that is has a big kitchen (but lacking a dishwasher).  One thing I missed while living in the pop-up camper was cooking.  So, Kyle and I have enjoyed some nice meals this week.  To celebrate Kyle's first day at his new job, I made him a Jamaican-spiced roasted chicken, along with roasted sweet potatoes, corn, onions, and mushrooms.  My mom gave me these pretty plates for my birthday, and I enjoyed gettting to use them for the first time.
I have also baked two loaves of beer bread this week. Beer bread is really good and simple to make. The first loaf was flavored with dill and cheddar cheese and was quite tasty. In the second loaf, pictured here, I used oregano, basil, fresh garlic, and a blend of Italian cheeses.  We haven't tried it yet, but is smells really good.  Should go well with spaghetti tomorrow night!

I have been wanting to make a spicy Indian dahl (lentil soup), so I thought tonight would be good night to experiment since Kyle is not home.  I added some of the left over chicken to the soup and it turned out really good.  I also had a tasty summer salad with a homemade balsamic glaze, strawberries, and walnuts.

I just got news from Kyle that he is coming home with some dove....looks like we will be experimenting with some more new recipes : )

Believe it or not, cooking is not the only thing that I have been doing the past couple of days.  Besides getting stuff done at the house (like painting our dresser in our bedroom to match our bed) I spent several hours yesterday and today at the best little coffee shop, Daybreak, applying for jobs, agonizing over whether I am going to get an interview for medical school, trying to find some volunteer opportunites in Lubbock, and getting a little work done for some colleagues back at A&M.  I spent so much time at this coffee shop when I was an undergrad at Tech, and I am enjoying being back : )  So far I haven't had any luck on the job front.  I have applied for several medical lab tech positions at the Health Science Center and for a surgical tech position at UMC.  I've also applied to be a substitute teacher at LISD and Lubbock Cooper, but those interviews are not until Oct. 8 and Oct. 16.  As far as volunteer opportunites, Kyle and I are looking into becoming a Big Couple (with the Big Brother, Big Sister program)....I think that would be a lot of fun and would be very rewarding!

That's enough for now...I must go pick up Kyle from his dove-hunting endeavor.  If you're keeping up with us through the blog, please leave a comment to let me know you're reading it!
